Projects

Waterlooville Town Centre
This town centre regeneration combines a pedestrian area with bus routes and highways. In the pedestrian area are simple, ground mounted two-colour leds uplighting trees. Around the perimeter are wall mounted units to provide background lighting for pedestrian access and security. These are located at a height to give a human scale to the installation. Elsewhere, high level lighting using a different coloured source is used for the bus routes and through traffic.

This scheme won an award in the Highways category of the 2007 Local Government News street design competition.

M27 Motorway
This motorway lighting project runs through a semi urban environment on the edge of Eastleigh and Southampton and close to the ‘Rose Bowl’ cricket ground. The 4 lamp flat glass lanterns are mounted on 18m columns and provide well controlled full cut-off lighting. The lights are switched together under group control with the power supply via a ‘private’ cable network.

Lighting the carriageway not the countryside
The lighting provides a safer night time environment, allowing drivers to easily detect objects on the carriageway.

Portsmouth Historic Naval Dockyard
DfL designed the lighting for the “Watering Island” area of the historic naval dockyard which includes the historic Semaphore Tower and surrounding work areas.
For the trial, the inside of the tower was illuminated by blue LEDs which created a beacon; part of the Portsmouth millennium ring of light. The exterior of the tower is lit to ensure that it is visible from across the harbour and from the nearby Spinnaker Tower. The scheme was installed to a tight budget, and time deadline.

Al Falah Community, Abu Dhabi.

This is a new town centre with six surrounding “villages” of about 70,000 people based on low energy and sustainability. DfL have been commissioned to write both a Policy and also the detailed design for all the exterior non-highway lighting. There are many linear parks and within these are linking footways and cycleways together with water and planter features, amenity areas and sports facilities.

We will be incorporating innovation and new technology, as these indicative photos of other schemes show.

Mafraq to Al Ghawait Expressway, Abu-Dhabi

This project comprises 329 kilometres of expressway in Abu Dhabi running to the Saudi border.

Working as a sub-consultant to the Client’s consultant (Mott MacDonald) we prepared a lighting strategy, and presented a lighting workshop in Abu Dhabi Municipality Offices for 4 M&E consultancies & government officers. The site was surveyed and lighting calculations supplied as examples of performance options.

On going advice is provided regarding the suitability of proposals from each consultant.

Desert Islands, Abu Dhabi
DfL are providing advice to our Client (Mott Macdonald) on the lighting associated with this exciting development on Sir Bani Yas island off the coast of Abu Dhabi which is to be developed into a high class leisure & environmental resort. Environmental issues are very important on this project including the use of low energy lighting and sustainable materials.

South Winchester Park & Ride
DfL undertook an environmental impact assessment of the lighting which led to a successful planning application. We then produced a lighting strategy and provided the detailed design for both the highway lighting and the lighting within the car park site, which incorporated remote monitoring. This project is currently about to commence construction.
Kettering Town Centre Redevelopment
This is a rural market town in the heart of Northamptonshire. Town planning and landscaping is being undertaken by the principle consultants, Savills.
DfL are providing advice on all aspects of the lighting.  We have written an overall nightscape Policy for the whole of Kettering and surrounding area. This includes guidance on future lighting strategies as the town develops in the future.
We have also produced detail designs for the Market Place; footways, fountains, public artwork, floodlighting of church and building facades.

This photo shows a computer visualisation of lighting for a historic building.
