Bournemouth opts for LEDs

Bournemouth Borough Council is to replace all of its street lighting with LED luminaires, as reported in the Lighting Journal March 2014 (pictured).

Designs for Lighting acted as consultants for the project with Mouchel responsible for developing the outline business case. The project also means replacing 1000 lighting columns, and is backed by £4.26m Salix funding. A further £3.5m from the council's prudential fund will also be needed.

Currently Bournemouth spends £1.1m a year on street lighting energy but following the upgrade it estimates a saving of 73 per cent over the next 20 years. This would be a reduction of £32.2m in spending. The scheme will also save 3700 tonnes of carbon a year, the equivalent of 19 per cent of current emissions.

Designs for Lighting are delighted to have been able to work on this excellent project.
